PHISHING OR VISHING SCAM

PHISHING OR VISHING SCAM
We have been receiving calls from customers regarding email and automated messages, using River Valley Bank’s name. They indicate their debit card is blocked for fraudulent charges and are asking for personal information.

Just a reminder we typically do not send emails regarding fraud on check card. Our check card processor Fifth Third does call and/or sends a letter to our cardholders for suspicious fraud. Fifth Third always notifies us of all contacts to our cardholders. To verify you can call eBanking, CSC or Sharon Powers to confirm any contact with cardholder.

Below is an article on some phishing attacks. Reassure our customers River Valley will not contact them by email for fraudulent activity, and to never give personal information over the phone or email. Simple call the bank.

Ask them if they gave any personal information, if so we should block their cards immediately, these people work fast. Sometimes the cardholder feels better if we just block their current cards and reissue. We always want our customers to feel comfortable so do what they feel most comfortable with.

These vishing attacks follow a series of attacks that have hit institutions from coast to coast since last fall, and validate the increasing numbers of overall phishing attacks reported in the Anti Phishing Working Group's recent report, which shows an increase of targeted phishing attacks directed at financial institutions.

Vishing is a form of phishing, where instead of people receiving an email trying to lure them into giving personal information, the criminal uses a phone call, either live or automated, to attack the bank or credit union customer and get critical information
